 Reviews and Articles

Sacred Rhythms - by Ruth Haley-Burton

This is a book about spiritual disciplines that is written from the heart.  It isn't so much a book with lots of information about disciplines, although it has some of course - rather it is written to draw us into a way of life, to find practices that help

us on our journey of being more like Jesus.

Quite simply I found this a wonderful book: one that makes you want to do the disciplines rather than leaving you feeling you 'ought' to do them.

The New Christians - by Tony Jones

If you are trying to understand the 'Emerging' church and all things emergent then this will be a really helpful book.  I was quire fascinated by some of the history around the development of the emergent conversation.

This is an insider's view of emerging church and tells us what it's all about.  So, if you are curious about this subject or. like me, already on board, I think you'll enjoy this book.

A Christianity Worth Believing - by Doug Pagitt

Doug sets out a personal vision for his faith.  This is a surprisingly personal and easy to read account of where he feels Christianity has gone wrong and something of his journey to find an expression of faith that is more holistic and kingdom focussed.

For me, this articulated some of the things I was already feeling but also helped me to see a bit more clearly something of the road ahead and what may be possible.

The Lost Apostle - by Rena Pederson

Rena is a journalist who uses her 'nose' for a good story to investigate how a name got changed in the bible and why.  What she uncovers should make us all uncomfortable and get us to dig a little deeper into our own understanding of things.

For some, this book will be highly controversial; for others, liberating.  Finding out that there was a female apostle in the early church may come as a shock to some.  Finding out how this was covered up and how the church came to be more like the surrounding culture in its attitude to women should shock us all.

Nooma - Rob Bell

Nooma DVDs are a series of short (10 - 15 minute) films about getting a Christian perspective on issues that we care about.

They are creative and innovative, with Rob Bell giving insightful spiritual direction in a format for today's generation.
